THE TOUR
A hidden gorge, kept in the family
Nyanda Gorge has stayed a family secret for generations. While much of the region was opened up for grazing, this gorge was left largely untouched, and it still has its clear spring-fed pools, birdsong and a fascinating mix of plants.
The tour pairs a scenic tag-along drive over the rugged sandstone ranges of Nyanda Station with short walks into the gorge. Your guide shares the stories hidden in the landscape, and we finish at our lookout over rarely seen parts of Carnarvon National Park.

ALONG THE WAY
What you'll see

Sandy Gorge Lookout
A short walk, about 300m each way, to the top of a hidden gorge, looking down from the ancient sandstone cliffs.

Morning tea at Black Alley Creek
Our most remote corner of Nyanda. We stop by a spring-fed creek for a homemade morning tea and a cuppa.

Creek Junction
A bit of rock hopping takes us into the start of Nyanda Gorge, with its deep pools and wildlife. About 800m return.

Consuelo Gorge Lookout
The finish, looking out over rarely seen parts of Carnarvon National Park from the top of the ranges.

Meet at the Nyanda Shelter
We meet at the shelter at the entrance to Nyanda. Follow the signs from the Rewan, Obriens and Wyseby Road junction.
Welcome and briefing
Meet your guide, hear a little about Nyanda and run through a quick briefing. We’ll hand you a two-way radio if your vehicle doesn’t have one.
Over the ranges
We drive over the ranges, from sandy soils to clay, each with its own mix of plants.
Walk to Sandy Gorge Lookout
A short walk, about 300m each way, to the top of a hidden gorge.
On to Black Alley
Views out over the Carnarvon Ranges, then across deep gullies and rugged country to the most remote part of Nyanda.
Morning tea by Black Alley Creek
A homemade morning tea and a cuppa beside the spring-fed creek.
The rock pools of Consuelo Creek
Some rock hopping and an 200m return walk to the pools at the junction of Black Alley and Consuelo Creeks.
Consuelo Gorge Lookout and home

You drive your own vehicle the whole way and hear the commentary over a two-way radio. No radio? We’ll lend you one. About 1km of walking in total. We go at a pace that suits the group.

GOOD TO KNOW
Your questions, answered
About 1km in total, over mostly even ground. If you’re a slower walker, that’s fine; we go at the group’s pace.
A beginner level 4WD track with some sandy and rocky sections. Most vehicles don’t need 4x4 engaged, as long as they have good clearance.
Comfortable, sun-safe clothes and sturdy walking shoes or boots. Our tours run in the cooler months, so bring a warm jacket for cold winter mornings.
Nature lovers of all ages who are comfortable on rocky ground. If you’d rather skip the walking, the Highlands 4WD Tag-Along is a great fit, although the walking is very easy.
WHY WITH US
Small groups, guided by the people who grew up here
As a small group operator, you get more time with your guide and more chance to ask questions. Our guides grew up in this area and are accredited Savannah Guides, with years spent learning the local landscape, ecology and history.
“The 4WD track was fantastic … and the tour itself was amazing. Christian was very knowledgeable about the area and cattle farming and he even provided pumpkin scones with tea and coffee part way through … We would highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves 4WDs and wants to experience untouched parts of the gorge.”
